What will happen at my first visit?
After establishing your medical and dental profile by completing our health history form, we can begin your first thorough examination. This first exam checks for bone loss, loose teeth, bite, oral cancer, temporomandibular (tem-puh-roe-man-DIB-u-lur) joint (TMJ) TMJ disorders and signs of periodontal disease.
What should I bring?
On the day of your initial visit, please bring the following:
- If referred by your dentist, please bring your referral form and the X-rays from your referring dental office. We will request previous X-rays from your dentist, but will often use our Cone Beam computed tomography (CT) to produce three dimensional (3-D) images to help plan your treatment.
- For your convenience, you can access our Health History and Privacy Practices forms. Simply click to view, print and complete for your first visit.
- A list of current medications
- Your dental insurance card or dental insurance information
- Please note: Patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the day of the initial visit
Will my exam hurt?
Our periodontal exam can be completed with little or no discomfort. Be assured we will be as gentle as possible.
Do I need X-rays?
Yes, we will need current dental X-rays. If your referring dentist has taken X-rays, you may request these be forwarded to us by email or fax. If you don’t have X-rays at the time of your initial visit, we can complete them at our office.
What will it cost?
Since all patients are different, we must complete your initial examination before establishing your treatment plan and the fee for care. The fee for your periodontal treatment is based on:
• Type of problem(s)
• Complexity and length of treatment
An estimated fee can usually be determined after the initial visit. Occasionally, some initial treatment and further diagnostics will be needed before the final treatment plan can be established. Our focus is your smile and health and we offer financing options to help you achieve the best of both.
Will my insurance cover the cost?
Dental insurance policies often cover a portion of periodontal treatment. Please bring all medical and dental benefit information and cards to your initial examination to help us determine if your policy may be beneficial for costs.

Will I need surgery?
Not everyone needs periodontal surgery — and if treated early, gum disease can be controlled without surgery. We will make recommendations based on your individual situation, and offer the best conservative approach to reach treatment goals. If we do find you need surgery, our goal is to educate you on the best treatment approach you’re comfortable with.
Can my teeth be saved?
The recent advances in periodontal treatment we offer allow us to successfully treat most teeth. Your first visit will help us determine the best treatment plan for your needs. If your teeth cannot be saved, we will discuss replacement strategies with you.
When will I go back to my general dentist?
We pride ourselves in collaborating closely with your dentist throughout your treatment plan. If crowns and fillings are needed, we recommend your dentist provide them. We also strongly encourage regular visits to your dentist as an important part of periodontal maintenance.
What if I choose not to have gum treatment?
Often referred to as the “silent disease,” periodontal disease is a progressive, painless infection. Delayed treatment can cause you further bone loss, lost teeth and potentially overall more expense.
